it seems people have nearly written as much as this essay.
hence this essay needs extending.

tao li vs Richards Yates.

for this contest i will take tao as he is currently and Richard Yates when he had published about as much as tao.
i am going for 1975 Richard Yates.

age:
1975 Richard Yates is 49 years old, 2010 tao lin is 27.
2010 tao lin has done little more than write.
1975 Richard Yates has been in the army, serving in WW2, he has done a bunch of journalism; he has been teaching writing and written a screen play. Yates has been married and has two daughters.
Yates has had tuberculosis badly in 1950’s and is still alive.

i think Yates wins w.r.t. age and experience.

2010 tao lin eats mostly vegan food.
2010 tao lin maybe drinks but probably doesn’t smoke.

i think Yates wins this one. the fact he was recognized as a great writer but didn’t manage to sell seems more artistic than tao who manages to sell lots of books.
i cannot imagine Richard Yates holding competitions or printing stickers to advertise his writing.
tao may achieve greater recognition in the future than Richard Yates did but this will be less as a result of his writing and more a consequence of gimmicks and other advertising.
that is why i think the fame of Richard Yates is better than the fame of tao.

both these names seem appealing to me.
they are easy to say.

i think it would be good if Richard Yates was a tv journalist so that at the end of a report he would say “this is Richard Yates reporting…”

this novel is discussed above.
it is tao’s current best shot at critical acclaim maybe.
tao is not an alcoholic, he probably did not write much of this novel while drunk.

it is hard to judge which writing is better.
tao has an advantage in that he has read Richard Yates’ work and can be/was influenced but Richard Yates’ work.
Richard Yates has the advantage that he is older and has more experience.
both writers have generally been somewhat autobiographical in their writing, tao talking about living in New York, Richard Yates talking about being a soldier in ww2.
both writers are writing in American English.

but i imagine the typical tao lin fan is not necessarily a tao lin fan for long.
i think people react to tao lin in a temporal way.
his fans show and admit to obsession but then i guess they all fade away.
i do not think i have heard of anybody who entered tao’s competition.
i am not sure a Richard Yates fan would write an essay about Richard Yates for a competition.
i imagine both fan bases are predominantly made of white American people.
i imagine that Richard Yates’ fan base is largely male.
i think tao’s fan base is more balanced in terms of gender.

i feel that Richard Yates’ fan base is more likely to be dedicated to his writing and more likely to appreciate it in an intellectual and/or intelligent way than tao lin’s fan base.
i think Richard Yates fans are more likely to read Richard Yates books with a glass of wine whereas tao lin fans would be likely to drink kombucha or maybe starbucks coffee.
Richard Yates fans should be more worldly but also more pessimistic.
i think tao lin fans have an energy and appreciation of life that Richard Yates fans would not.
i think Richard Yates writing does not offer hope re: escaping from loneliness.
i think although tao lin writes about loneliness he also has some element of enjoyment.
maybe an acceptance of loneliness.

i am not sure, but i think it is there.

tao lin’s fan base seems loud but Richard Yates’ would be more obnoxious and sarcastic.
i imagine Richard Yates’ fan base are more likely to get angry easily.

in conclusion: until tao wanders the streets of los angeles claiming to be Jesus Christ he will never even be comparable to Richard Yates.

i started looking at the blog on July 26, 2010. from experience, tao’s blog has had blog posts removed by tao and therefore there it is likely that i will miss some information that had been posted but then deleted.
tao’s blog currently has a large banner advertising Richard Yates.
the blog also has a news feed, probably designed to make people feel included in some way.
the blog is predominantly full of information regarding tao lin and this writing.
tao has removed the links to people that he had, now all the links directly relate to him.
tao’s blog is named he he he he he he hee he he hee he he, maybe.
actually tao’s blog is named tao lin blog.
it is the first result when one googles tao lin.
tao has links to his twitter, tumblr, Wikipedia and blog underneath the picture of Richard Yate’s cover.
these links are next to ‘check boxes’.
‘checking’ the boxes has no effect.
this seems to be confusing to me, i am not certain whether it is deliberate.

31/05/08: tao mentions deleting 8000 words from his next novel.
this may be Richard Yates but it is possible that tao is referring to shoplifting from American apparel.
he mentions feeling that deleting a lot is intense and describes internal conflict over the deletion but decides the novel would be more interesting to him if he deleted the words.

to my understanding the original idea was to have both Britney spears and tao lin written on the stickers, but then tao developed the idea to just have Britney spears written on the sticker.

tao has also given away free books.

i feel there is maybe a core group of followers who appreciate tao’s writing but find his gimmicky advertising to be annoying or tacky, or otherwise irrelevant.

i am not sure why tao makes so much effort to publicize his books.
it might point towards some kind of insecurity that tao has about his work.
i.e. that he does not feel that his work is good enough in itself, but that he has to add extra, unrelated reasons for people to take interest in it/him.
this idea is supported by the fact tao heavily edits his writing.
to my understanding tao spends at least 5x longer editing his writing than he takes to originally write it.
therefore he would seem to be trying to create something perfect maybe.
i am uncertain whether there is truly a significant notable improvement after tao’s extensive editing process.

i used to enjoy reading html giant.
then it sort of grew up and got confused.
most of the time the pictures don't show up in the rss feed for me.
the posts have become increasingly disinteresting for me.

the book is a good journey

a tiny fly flew around my face today
it seemed wildly unstable
it kept flitting about
wobbling in the air
every so often i would swat at it
and i would hit it
and it would land on my book
or the table
or the person sitting next to me
when it landed it seemed a little stunned
then it walked about for a bit
then it started flying around my body again
one time, the person sitting next to me tried to kill the fly
but she failed
i am not sure how she failed because i was not paying great attention to that
i did not want the fly to be killed
i thought for a while that the fly was dead
and i wondered what that meant to me
i suffered a little annoyance because i did not want to just kill that fly
and it would have turned out that the annoyance i suffered was for nothing
because the fly ended up killed anyway
however that attitude is logically inconsistant
the fly was going to die anyway
so by not killing it, i was placing value on its life as a temporary thing
i was valuing its life in moments rather than as a single concept
so by not killing it i was allowing it to have more moments alive
and so it doesn't matter if someone else had killed it later
because i did all i could to allow it to be alive for the moments when i had the choice to kill it or not
flies do not live very long
the fly that flew around my face might be dead tomorrow from natural causes
it has no idea that i could have killed it
it has no idea that i could have ended its existence as a living fly
until you read this, no one but me knew that i took the action to allow the fly to live
when the normal response was probably to kill the fly
during this whole episode i was chewing gum
three pieces of gum
it was a large blob in my mouth
it was totally tasteless at that point

lately i feel like quitting the internet
there are a million reasons why i think me and the internet is not healthy

there is a small ghost floating above a chair. the ghost is thinking about how it feels the have the wind blow through you. he is wondering why he feels cold when he has no body. there are many things to think about when you are a ghost and you have much time to think.

the ghost tries to float as high as he can. for some reason he can only reach a few feet about the ground. the ghost thinks about lung cancer. he sneezes a little.

the world feels a little bit like a film with frames missing. the ghost feels like it has developed bad posture. he feels tired.

the ghost is waiting for something that he knows won’t happen. but he is waiting anyway. he is drinking bad tasting coffee.

the ghost is haunting an old lady. she is not afraid. he does not know what to do about that. he tries shouting louder, then whispering, then he tries clapping. the lady claps with him. they end up clapping for twenty minutes. the ghost gives up.

the ghost is not sure if he is male. he is not sure if ghosts really have gender. he gets distracted by a clock and watches it for a while until he realizes what he is doing. he feels embarrassed. he sees that another ghost has been watching him watch the clock. he feels doubly embarrassed. the other ghost smiles at him. he becomes invisible out of shame.

the ghost feels underfed. he is not fed. ghosts cannot eat. ghosts can drink. but ghosts cannot drink soup.

the ghost wants to be married but he is pretty sure that ghosts are not allowed to be married. the ghost tried to find another ghost to marry. he ended up feeling very confused and lost. he was not sure what he was meant to be doing but he was sure there was a right way to be doing things. and he was sure he was not doing anything the right way.

the ghost is excited. he feels somethings good are going to happen. he also feels like he could mess up and all the good things would turn bad. but he is not so much worried as anxious. he is anticipating happiness but feels a little that if he does become happy it will be empty. he thinks that thinking about this too much is ruining it all. the ghost watches a van drive past him. the van has its side door open. there are some sort of crates inside.

the ghost goes for a walk. he floats above streets that he is not familiar with. sometimes he floats through people but he is too distracted by his thoughts to notice. the inside of a living person looks nasty when you float through them. the inside of another ghost is magical when you float through one. the ghost is thinking of trees and drama. he feel that he lacks a certain drama in his existence.
‘drama is what happens when people get together and live’ he thinks.

most ghosts tend to hang about where they lived. some prefer to live where thy died. this ghost just wanders through places. sometimes this ghost floats through a place where he was once alive. it feels a little odd. the ghost does not feel an longing or sadness. he does not feel happy or surprised. he just feels some increased level of emotion.
the ghost enjoys rooftops. the ghost once spent a whole month resting on a roof. he watched the people come and do roof based things. he looked at people on the ground. one time he saw a group of ghosts floating high in the sky going somewhere. once there was a small party on the roof and the ghost felt bad because he had not been invited.
when the ghost felt it was time to leave he had a small smart idea. he jumped over the side of the building. when he had this idea he wondered why he had never thought of it before. the ghost enjoyed how it felt to fall. it did not feel like anything. it felt no different than when he was floating about the ground. but that made it beautiful.

the ghost feels like he had some sort of story before he became a ghost but his past seems really irrelevant to his current situation.

the ghost wants to eat an apple. he floats through an apple. it does not feel the same.
he tried talking to a cloud. clouds look a bit like ghosts but more shapeless. the cloud does not talk back to the ghost, but the ghost keeps talking anyway. the ghost has a nice long conversation with the cloud. he talks about how he is worried that he has no home, he talks about how he feels when it rains and water falls through him, he talks about how he cannot remember what it was like to breathe. the cloud watched the ghost talking. the cloud feels a little confused.

sometimes days pass before the ghost realizes he exists. sometimes he just exists without thinking about it. and he feels guilty when he realizes he forgot to think that he is. and then he wonders whether or not he should be feeling guilty. the ghost tries to be thankful for all the things he has, but then he wonders what he does have. he does not seem to have much compared to the people who are alive. he seems to have a little more than the clouds. the ghost is glad he was not a chef before he died. that would make being a ghost uncomfortable.
the ghost tries to remember clothing. he tried to recall how it felt. lately he has enjoyed watching people dress before they go out at night. he likes how they are all very careful and delicate. he wonders if he was ever like that. he wonders if there ever was anyone who worried about how they would look for him. he likes how people always put clothes on their beds. it is always on their beds.

the ghost lived with a cat for a small time. the cat could see the ghost. the ghost would help the cat catch mice by scaring the mice towards the waiting cat. the ghost would try to make sure the cat was not disturbed while it slept. the ghost was happy when he was around the cat because the cat was alive and it did not look worried by the ghost. the cat did not seem to really like the ghost, but the fact the cat did not run away was enough. the cat disappeared sometime when the ghost was sleeping. the ghost tried not to feel sad about that. the ghost has never wanted to find another cat to spend time with.

for a while the ghost lived in a library. he would try to read the books by peering through the pages and moving millimeters forward to read the next page. it was a delicate process and quite often the ghost would go too far forward and miss a page. this led to him feeling that a lot of stories were very confusing and not worth the effort to read.
sometimes the ghost would read books by floating behind people who were reading. he liked it when he managed to synchronise with the reader such that they both reached the end of the page together. he would give a little cheer sometimes. sometimes he would find a very fast reader and he would race them to finish the page. the people who read very fast tended to read more interesting books. people who read very slowly sometimes read very interesting books too, but usually only if they were young.

the ghost gets drunk. being a drunk ghost is most unfortunate. it is completely different than being drunk when you are alive. when you are a ghost you don’t have to worry about knocking into things and looking foolish. as a ghost being drunk is totally wild. you can float twice as fast as normal and higher and you can twist and turn better. it is a delightful feeling and it lasts for a long time. however as a ghost you always get a huge hangover.
so when you are a ghost, to get drunk is a commitment. you know that you will feel terrible afterwards. you are always aware there is going to be that price to pay. so when this ghost gets drunk he has a real reason for it.

time is jolting past quickly. the ghost feels a sort of tiredness at watching too much and not participating in anything. the ghost has been looking at all the living things as they live. he has been watching people die too.
watching someone die is intense. the ghost feels a little wrong. the ghost feels a little worried. he has never seen someone die and become a ghost. the ghost has spend months in a hospital and not once did someone become another ghost. the ghost is worried that he is playing a game and he has not been told the rules.

the ghost feels tired.

i write whenever i feel compelled to.

sometimes i find it difficult to write, and i deal with it by not writing.

i don't know if robot prostitution has a goal or not. i suppose it may.

i don't know how the weather affects me. something about warm weather seems to help.

my morning routine is usually the following: wake up, turn on the computer.

my education is that of a standard united states primary and secondary education.

i don't know what i consider as just doing nothing or how much time i spend just doing nothing, but i like that question and i will ponder it.

i generally refer to a dictionary on a daily basis at least. sometimes more, depending on the circumstances.

How accurate do you think you are at conveying yourself through your poetry?
my intention of writing poetry is to express myself honestly. i'd like to think i convey myself fairly accurately.

How important do you think your poetry is?
i think my poetry is important if anyone who wants to read it, or if anyone who wants to publish it, or if anyone wants to know who i am.

How important do you think poetry is in general?
i think poetry is important because it is a form of expression. art, beauty, and creativity are all very important to me.

What do you think about the correct use of grammar? How crucial is it?
i perceive grammar as a set of guidelines which can sometimes be helpful in order to communicate.

Do you ever feel like giving up writing? how often?
sometimes i feel like not existing anymore. it happens about once every ten days or so.

Would you say you have a Muse?
i would not say i have a muse, but i like the idea of having one.

How much do you edit your writing and how do you feel about that?
my writing is thoroughly edited and i feel anxious about that.

If you could pass one law what would it be?
if i could pass one law it would be free lunch for everyone.

i laugh very often. twice daily at least. usually more.

How important is your sense of smell to your writing?
sense of smell is important to me because i think everything has the potential to inspire.

sometimes i think 'i am a human being', and i feel confused about what it is to be human.

What is your attitude towards animals? in a general way. eg do you like to eat them, are they merely a mirror for your own attitudes, should we save the whales...
my attitude toward animals is that i think they need to be treated with love and respect. i would rather not eat animals, but i do

what is your opinion of advertising?
is there a significant difference between coperate advertising and an individual advertising themself?
i perceive advertising as a fundamental aspect of contemporary society. i think advertising can serve a purpose, such as allowing the
general public to become aware of goods and services which may potentially be of interest to them. advertising can also serve another purpose, which is that of social conditioning. i perceive social conditioning as being harmful. corporate advertising is one example of this.

to what extend do you consider lyrics in songs as poetry?

i consider lyrics to be poetry. i am reluctant to label one song as being more poetic than others, as i think it's open to interpretation.

Are there any words that you consider particularly thematic with respects to your creative output?
words i would consider to be thematic to my work include: sex, money, desire, loneliness, isolation.

i associate the word 'squash' with a vegetable and a sport..

i feel overwhelmed by people on a daily basis.

i very often dislike people for a variety of reasons.

i predict that i will continue to be surprised in the future.
